From our yard to your site: Our fleet delivers lumber and building materials across Chicagoland six days a week, with same-day service available on orders placed before 10 AM.

Same-Day and Next-Day Delivery Options

Time is money on any construction project, and waiting days for materials to show up is not an option when a crew is standing idle. At Chicago Lumber & Building Materials, we offer same-day delivery on all in-stock items ordered before 10 AM, Monday through Friday. If you place your order after the morning cutoff, your materials will ship the following business day. Saturday deliveries are also available for weekend projects and tight schedules that cannot wait until Monday.

Our dispatch team works closely with you to schedule deliveries within AM or PM windows so you can plan your workday with confidence. You will receive a confirmation when your order is loaded and a notification when the driver is en route, so there is no guesswork about when materials will arrive.

Delivery Area: All of Chicago and the Suburbs

We deliver to every neighborhood in the City of Chicago and to suburbs within a 40-mile radius of our West Grand Avenue yard. Whether your project is in Lincoln Park, Lakeview, West Loop, Logan Square, Hyde Park, Bridgeport, Rogers Park, Pilsen, Bucktown, or any other Chicago neighborhood, our drivers know how to get there efficiently. On the suburban side, we routinely deliver to Oak Park, Evanston, Cicero, Berwyn, Naperville, Schaumburg, Arlington Heights, Downers Grove, Elmhurst, and communities throughout Cook, DuPage, Lake, and Will counties.

Our drivers are experienced at navigating Chicago’s unique logistical challenges. Narrow alleys, permit-only parking zones, low-clearance viaducts, one-way streets, and dense residential blocks are all part of a normal delivery day for our team. We plan routes carefully and communicate with you about any access considerations before we arrive.

Our Delivery Fleet

Different materials and job sites require different equipment. Our fleet includes several vehicle types to handle virtually any delivery scenario:

  • Flatbed trucks for lumber, plywood, OSB, and large panel goods. Flatbeds allow forklift loading and make it easy to unload long materials at the job site.
  • Boom trucks for rooftop delivery of shingles, plywood, and framing materials. The hydraulic boom lifts heavy bundles directly to the roof or a second-story deck, saving hours of manual hauling and reducing the risk of worker injury.
  • Enclosed delivery trucks for finish-grade materials that need weather protection during transit, including interior trim, hardwood flooring, and specialty millwork.

What to Expect on Delivery Day

When you schedule a delivery with Chicago Lumber & Building Materials, the process is straightforward:

  1. Order confirmation: You receive an order summary with your delivery date and AM/PM window.
  2. Day-of notification: Our dispatch team contacts you when the truck is loaded and provides an estimated arrival time.
  3. Arrival and placement: Our driver positions materials where you specify on site. For lumber and sheet goods, we use stickers and blocking to keep the load off the ground. For boom truck deliveries, our operator places bundles precisely on the roof area you designate.
  4. Sign-off: You or your site foreman inspects the delivery, confirms the material count, and signs the delivery receipt.

How to Prepare Your Site for Delivery

A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth delivery. Before our truck arrives, make sure:

  • The delivery area is clear of vehicles, debris, and equipment.
  • There is adequate access for the truck type scheduled. A standard flatbed needs roughly 10 feet of width and 50 feet of length for safe maneuvering.
  • Someone authorized to accept the delivery is on site during the scheduled window.
  • For boom truck deliveries, confirm that overhead power lines and tree limbs do not obstruct the boom path.
  • If the delivery is on a city street, check whether a Chicago street-use permit is required and have it in place.

Delivery Pricing

We keep delivery pricing simple and transparent. Orders totaling $500 or more qualify for free delivery within our standard service area (approximately a 25-mile radius from our yard). For orders below that threshold or deliveries beyond the standard zone, fees are based on distance and load size. Boom truck service carries an additional equipment surcharge. Your account representative or our order desk can provide an exact delivery quote before you commit to an order.

Contractors with active trade accounts enjoy preferential delivery scheduling and may qualify for reduced or waived delivery fees depending on their account tier. Learn more about our contractor account program.

Delivery Fleet Details

Our fleet is purpose-built for the variety of loads and job-site conditions found across Chicagoland. Here is a closer look at each vehicle type, its capacity, and the situations where it excels.

VehicleCapacityMax Load LengthBest Use Cases
Flatbed TruckUp to 10,000 lbs24 feetLumber, plywood, OSB, long framing stock, panel goods, steel beams
Boom TruckUp to 8,000 lbs lift capacity65-foot reach, 3 storiesRooftop shingle delivery, second-story framing, plywood to upper floors
Enclosed Box TruckUp to 6,000 lbs16 feetHardwood flooring, finish trim, millwork, moisture-sensitive materials
Curtain-Side TrailerUp to 12,000 lbs24 feetMixed loads requiring side-loading, palletized goods, large orders with multiple drops

Flatbed trucks are our workhorse vehicles for standard lumber and sheet-goods deliveries. The open bed allows forklift loading from either side, and the 24-foot deck accommodates full-length dimensional lumber without overhang. Flatbeds can navigate most Chicago residential alleys and side streets with a minimum clearance of 10 feet wide and 50 feet of straight maneuvering space.

Boom trucks are equipped with a hydraulic knuckle-boom crane capable of reaching up to 65 feet horizontally and lifting loads to rooftops up to three stories high. This is the vehicle of choice for roofing contractors who need shingle bundles, plywood, or ice-and-water barrier placed directly on the roof. Boom delivery eliminates the labor, time, and injury risk of manually hauling hundreds of pounds of material up a ladder. Our boom operators are trained and certified, and each delivery includes a pre-lift safety assessment of the site.

Enclosed box trucks provide full weather protection for finish-grade materials that cannot be exposed to rain, snow, or road spray. Interior trim, pre-finished hardwood flooring, custom millwork, and specialty moldings are delivered in enclosed trucks to arrive in the same condition they left our warehouse.

Curtain-side trailers combine the capacity of a flatbed with the weather protection of an enclosed trailer. Retractable side curtains allow forklift access from the side for fast loading and unloading, while the curtains keep materials covered during transit. These are ideal for large mixed orders and multi-stop routes.

What Happens on Delivery Day: Step by Step

We believe a great delivery experience is about communication and reliability. Here is exactly what to expect on the day your materials arrive:

  1. Driver calls 30 minutes ahead. Your assigned driver calls or texts you (or your designated site contact) with an ETA approximately 30 minutes before arrival. This gives you time to clear the delivery area and be ready on site.
  2. Arrival and introduction. The driver arrives, confirms the delivery address and order number, and introduces themselves. They will ask where you want the materials placed.
  3. Safety check of the placement area. Before unloading, the driver performs a quick visual safety assessment: Is the ground firm enough for the truck? Are there overhead wires within reach of the boom? Is the path to the placement area clear of obstructions? If any condition poses a safety concern, the driver will discuss alternatives with you on the spot.
  4. Unloading with proper equipment. The driver uses the truck’s onboard forklift, boom crane, or manual unloading equipment (depending on the vehicle type) to offload your materials. Lumber and sheet goods are placed on stickers and blocking to keep them off the ground and promote air circulation.
  5. Material placement where you want it. We do not just drop materials at the curb. Our drivers place your order as close to the work area as safely possible -- on the driveway, in the backyard, on the roof, or beside the job-site staging area. You direct the placement.
  6. Delivery verification and signature. The driver walks through the delivery with you, confirming item counts against the packing slip. You (or any person 18 or older authorized to receive the delivery) sign the delivery receipt. Any discrepancies are noted immediately and reported to our dispatch team for resolution.
  7. Follow-up call the next business day. Our customer service team contacts you the following day to confirm everything arrived in good condition, ask about your experience, and address any questions or concerns.

Jobsite Safety Requirements

Keeping everyone safe during a delivery is a shared responsibility. To ensure a smooth and incident-free unloading process, your job site must meet the following requirements before our truck arrives:

  • Clear path at least 12 feet wide. The route from the street to the material placement area must be free of vehicles, dumpsters, scaffolding, tools, and other obstructions. A 12-foot-wide path allows safe passage for our truck or forklift equipment.
  • Firm, stable ground. Our trucks and forklifts are heavy. Soft, muddy, or recently excavated ground can cause a truck to sink or tip. If the delivery area is unpaved, confirm the surface is compacted and capable of supporting a loaded vehicle weighing up to 40,000 pounds.
  • Overhead wire clearance. Boom truck deliveries require a minimum of 20 feet of vertical clearance from any overhead power lines, cable lines, or tree branches within the boom’s working radius. Per OSHA regulations, our boom operators cannot work within 20 feet of energized power lines. If lines are present, contact your utility provider about temporary insulation or de-energization before the delivery date.
  • An adult (18+) must be present to receive the delivery. Someone authorized to accept the order, verify the material count, and sign the delivery receipt must be on site during the delivery window. We cannot leave materials without a signed receipt.
  • Do not block fire hydrants, sidewalks, or crosswalks. Materials must not be placed on or blocking any fire hydrant, public sidewalk, crosswalk, or accessible path. Violations can result in City of Chicago fines of $150-$500 per incident.
  • If conditions change, call us immediately. If construction activity, weather, or permit issues change the site conditions between scheduling and delivery day, call our dispatch team at least 4 hours before your delivery window. We can often adjust the delivery plan, reschedule, or send a different vehicle type to accommodate changed conditions at no additional charge.

Delivery FAQ

Delivery pricing is based on distance from our yard and the size of the load. Orders over $500 within our standard service area qualify for free delivery. For smaller orders or deliveries outside our standard zone, fees typically range from $50 to $150. Call us for an exact quote based on your location and order.

Same-day delivery is available for in-stock items ordered before 10 AM Monday through Friday. Depending on our delivery schedule, most same-day orders arrive by early-to-mid afternoon. All other standard orders are delivered next business day. Saturday deliveries can also be arranged.

There is no strict minimum order, but delivery fees apply to orders under $500. For very small orders, it may be more cost-effective to pick up from our yard. Our team can help you determine the best option for your situation when you place your order.

Yes. Our boom truck can lift bundles of roofing shingles, plywood, lumber, and other materials directly to a rooftop or upper-story location. This saves significant labor time and reduces the risk of injury from manual hauling. Boom truck delivery requires adequate street or alley access and overhead clearance, which our dispatch team confirms before scheduling.

You can schedule deliveries by placing an order online, contacting us through our website, or speaking with your account representative. We offer AM and PM delivery windows and will confirm your window when the order is placed. For recurring deliveries on large projects, we can set up a standing schedule that aligns with your construction timeline.
